On the last Sunday afternoon of each month, from 2-5pm, join Gillian for an alignment-based hatha yoga workshop focusing on a particular theme, or exploring a specific part of the body. After the workshop, enjoy afternoon tea and cake in the Drawing Room of Beckenham Place Mansion, looking over the beautiful grounds of Beckenham Place Park.
The first of the Sunday Afternoon Specials focuses on opening through the hips.
Hip-opening sequences can bring a profound sense of release in many different areas of the body. This is because more than 20 muscles cross the hips, so any movement that stretches and releases tightness in the hips also creates a sense of opening in other related parts of the body, such as the lower back.
When hips are tight, the spine is affected, and opening and releasing through the hips can improve the range of back movement, increase circulation and reduce back pain. Often, there is also a sense of energy releasing in the body as tightness in the hips begins to move and open.
Gripping through the hips in everyday life can mean that a hip-opening class brings the opportunity for emotional shifts – a letting go of emotional holding patterns. Opening through the hips can, then, create the chance for openings in life as pathways for living differently begin to unfold through a new sense of freedom in the body.
