Described by the BBC Royal Academy documentary last year as ‘Master of The Undergrowth’, Sophia’s work has evolved during her time at our Mansion Studios, influenced and inspired by her surroundings at Beckenham Place Park, in particular the Ancient Woodlands and her love of nature. Her piece, ’The Major’s Garden’ was selected for the 2020 Royal Academy Summer exhibition.
“The nature of my work varies but mostly involves acrylics and large canvases. Right now, I am enjoying painting the infinite possibilities and impressionistic observations of that unsung hero, ‘The Undergrowth’ but sometimes I will venture into more abstract and figurative work. Subject matter can often come from places of my imagination and memory. I’m also working on a series called ‘Life Choices’, which is a slow burn project, exploring ideas around those pivotal moments we all have and the consequences.
Beckenham Place Park is full of wonderful memories for me, my family and my dog! I have lived in this area all my life. I still have to pinch myself to realise I have an art studio in this beautiful place and to be working amongst such talented people within the Mansion and Community.”
